School – Home Partnership

A strong school – home partnership is a major factor in supporting a child’s learning. P.S. 1 strives to maintain strong communication ties with our students and their families. A monthly school calendar of activities and schedule is sent home with your child. There are frequent letters notifying parents of important dates, meetings, workshop opportunities and class activities. These letters are sent home with your child or can be found on our website. There may also be important forms that may require your attention. Therefore, please check your child’s book bag daily for important school notices and forms. In addition, take time to review your child’s homework to ensure that it is completed and to discuss with him/her the content that s/he is learning in school.

Parents are encouraged to discuss with teachers their children’s educational progress and needs. However, parents must schedule an appointment with the teacher to ensure that the meeting receives the time and attention that it deserves.

In the beginning of every school year, grade orientation meetings will be held during Back to School Night to inform parents about grade curriculum, learning standards and teacher expectations. This is an important opportunity for you to visit the classroom and gain insight into the year of learning in which your child will be engaged in. Letters will be sent home and emails informing you of the specific date and time.

The Department of Education has created NYC School Accounts for each student. Parents can register and have access to their child’s report cards, attendance and other information. Letters with registration instructions will be sent home in the beginning of the year.

The School Leadership Team (SLT) is a committee composed of equal number of parents and staff that meets monthly to collaborate on addressing important school issues. You are welcome to join us for these meetings.

We encourage you to become active members of our Parent Teacher Association (PTA). Every school year the PTA requests dues to fund programs for children’s learning. They have helped pay for specialty programs and classroom materials. We also encourage you to join us for monthly PTA meetings which are held every third Wednesday at 8:30AM. Meeting agendas will be sent home and emailed the week before. In addition, there will be parent workshops and activities. Planned workshops will focus on children learning. Letters will be sent home and emails notifying you of these meetings.

Room 203 is our Parent Room. Due to health and safety protocols implemented, our Parent Room is temporarily closed. We will keep all families updated as to when we can reopen it safely.
