Black History Month

Each February, Americans across the United States commemorate Black History Month, a month-long national celebration of the contributions and achievements that Black men and women have made throughout U. S. and world history.

January 25 to March 10

3K and Pre-Kindergarten Online Application Period will end on Friday, March 10, 2023.

Children born in 2019 and 2020 can apply to 3K and Pre-kindergarten for the 2023-2024 school.  All families who apply by the deadline will receive a 3K or Pre-kindergarten offer in the Spring.  All families should participate in 3K or Pre-kindergarten admissions, including children currently attending 3K programs.

We welcome current 3K families and families with children born in 2019 and 2020 to individual tours to meet with the 3K and Pre-kindergarten teachers and visit the classrooms.  Please contact Ms. Lau to schedule the appointment.  Please know we will be following all DOE health & safety guidelines which includes that adult visitors must provide proof of at least one vaccination shot to enter a DOE building. 

Virtual Cookshop for Families

2023 NYC School Survey

During this time, the parent/guardian of each student is eligible to complete the NYC School Survey which is an anonymous survey that helps school leaders understand what they think about the learning environment at their schools. This survey is to help school leaders learn how to improve the schools and help make it a better learning environment for the students.  Families can go to NYC School Survey to access the NYC School survey.  Families will enter “f” followed by their child’s nine-digit Student Identification (OSIS) Number to access the survey (e.g. f123456789). Note that “f” must be lowercase. 

Families can take the survey online via computer or mobile device at NYC School Survey in any of the nine DOE supported languages.  Or families can fill out and submit the paper survey.  We will distribute the paper survey to the students when it is delivered to our school.

We thank you and send our appreciation to all 3K, Pre-Kindergarten, and Kindergarten classes with baking apple pies in November and the 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade families who participated in the P.S. 1 Cook and Bake at home with a theme around Lunar New Year.

We invite you to register your child’s NYC Schools Account.  This account will allow the Department of Education to share important information with you, about your child’s learning, such as: enrollment history, attendance, report card, assessment data, and guardian’s contact information.  Ms. Lau will send a letter home and email the families who have not created their accounts.

Virtual Cookshop for Families

There are six free Virtual Cookshop for Families this school year. In the lessons, you will learn how to make healthy decisions. (More information to come)

Celebrations

Congratulations to our 5th graders on a wonderful culminating event with Dancing Classrooms on December 9, 2022.  On December 16, 2022, our students enjoyed the Winter Celebration with Apex for Youth during arts and crafts workshops.  Congratulations to our grades 2, 3 and 4 on a spectacular  Midwinter National Dance Institute (NDI) Performance on December 19, 2022.

Celebrations

Hispanic Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the diversity of Latin American cultures and the achievements of Latinos present and past during September 15th to October 15th. While we honor Hispanic heritage year-round, this month-long celebration gives us a platform to highlight our stories, traditions, and contributions. Our classrooms, art classes and during lunch, students will learn about Hispanic Heritage Month and during the week of October 10th, we will have music during arrival and dismissal time. Let’s celebrate as a family!!!

Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month AAPI (May 1 to May 31

During the month of May, we observe and recognize the contributions and influence of Asian Americans and Pacific Islander Americans to the history, culture, and achievements of our country.

Middle School Offers (for grade 5 families)

This month, the students will receive their middle school offer letters. Your child is automatically on the waitlist for any program that is listed higher on their application than the program where they received an offer. For example, if your child received an offer to their third-choice program, they are automatically waitlisted for their first-choice and second-choice programs.

Save for College Program (for Kindergarten students)

Kindergarten students participating in the NYC Kids RISE Save for College Program will be able to activate and view their NYC Scholarship Accounts in May. Once the NYC Scholarship Accounts are available, Ms. Lau will assist the kindergarten families.

Online Report Card Distribution

You can access your child’s report card after February 6, 2022 by login into NYCSA website: NYC Schools Account, review your child’s report card under “Grades” page, Performance Levels: 1 – Well Below Standards, 2 – Below Standards, 3 – Proficient, and 4 – Excels in Standards

School letter also known as Face to Face Letter

School letter is a “verification of enrollment” letter that officially states your child is enrolled at P. S. 1.  If an agency for example, accountant office requires proof of your child’s enrollment, a proof of address, or guardian information, the primary guardian can access the information by login into NYCSA website: NYC Schools Account.  You can then navigate to the “Details” dropdown menu and print a copy or take a screenshot of the “Student” page to present as proof of your home address. The “Enrollment” page can be used to present as proof of the student’s current attendance/enrollment and “Guardian” page can also be used to verify that you are the guardian of your child.

Middle School Admissions Process for Grade 5 Families

Thank you for submitting your child’s middle school application. If you have not submitted the application, the deadline to submit your child’s application is March 1, 2022. If you want to make any changes to your application, you may also do so by March 1, 2022.

Respect for All Week February 14 to February 18

All public schools across the city have had the opportunity to highlight and build upon ongoing programs to help students, staff and communities gain a better understanding of diversity.  During this time, schools may start new initiatives that promote respect for diversity and preventing bullying, intimidation, and bias-based harassment.  Our school is also encouraged to promote acceptance and understanding through theme-based lessons and activities, such as Kindness and No One Eats Alone Days. These lessons and activities were created to combat social and emotional isolation that is especially prevalent now during the Covid-19 pandemic.  Friday, February 18, 2022 is a National No One Eats Alone Day.

Black History Month

Each February, Americans across the United States commemorate Black History Month, a month-long national celebration of the contributions and achievements that Black men and women have made throughout U. S. and world history.

Kindergarten Online Application Period December 8, 2021 to January 18, 2022

Children born in 2017 can apply to kindergarten for the 2022 to 2023 school year by January 18, 2022.  All families who apply by the deadline will receive a kindergarten offer in the Spring.  All families should participate in kindergarten admissions, including children currently attending Pre-K programs. 

To apply, complete and submit your child’s kindergarten application one of three ways by the deadline:

Middle School Admissions Process for Grade 5 Families

The middle school application will open the week of January 10, 2022, and deadline to apply will be March 1, 2022.  Welcome letters are now in the mail to the families of all current fifth-grade public school students.  This letter includes an overview of middle school admissions, including how to create an account and use the DOE’s online school directory and application system, MySchools Middle School . NYC Schools Account

We invite you to register your child’s NYC Schools Account.  This account will allow the Department of Education to share important information with you, about your child’s learning, such as: enrollment history, attendance, report card, assessment data, and guardian’s contact information.  Ms. Lau will send a letter home and email the families, who have not created their accounts, with a video that details how to set up the accounts.

Blue Emergency Form

The Blue Emergency Contact Form is our first source of information in case of any emergency. Please complete and return it to your child’s teacher as soon as possible, if you have not yet done so. Please be sure that all phone numbers are current and in service, and that we can reach someone you list on the form

Family Income Inquiry Form (Breakfast/Lunch Form)

To assure the appropriate allocation of federal Title 1 dollars to our school and to determine the eligibility of your child(ren) for certain rights and services under the No Child Left Behind Act, this school year we are asked to distribute the Family Income Inquiry Form (Lunch Form) to those families who are not enrolled in the government assistance programs. We encourage you to fill out and submit the form or you may submit it online: Breakfast/Lunch Form. Ms. Lau will assist you with this process if you have any questions.

UPDATE: Emergency Broadband Benefit: Internet Service Discount

The Emergency Broadband Benefit is an Internet Service Discount program to help families and households struggling to afford internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic. Any families with children in schools offering free meals through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Community Eligibility Provision can sign up for this program, which means it’s available to all students enrolled in New York City’s public schools. The Emergency Broadband Benefit will provide a discount of up to $50 per month towards broadband service for eligible households and up to $75 per month for households on qualifying Tribal lands. Eligible households can also receive a one-time discount of up to $100 to purchase a laptop, desktop computer, or tablet from participating providers if they contribute more than $10 and less than $50 toward the purchase price.

Middle School Offers For Grade 5 Families

This month, the students will receive their middle school offer letters. Your child is automatically on the waitlist for any program that is listed higher on their application than the program where they received an offer. For example, if your child received an offer to their third-choice program, they are automatically waitlisted for their first-choice and second-choice programs. 

“Summer Rising” In-Person Program for Kindergarten For Grade 5

P. S. 1 students are invited to attend summer school at P. S. 2, 122 Henry Street, NYC from July 6 – August 20, 2021, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm. Last week, our school has sent out paper applications for in-person students. Citywide and Community Education Councils (CCEC) Election (May 1 to May 11, 2021)

The Child Mind Institute will be hosting Caregiver Support Workshops. This workshop series is designed to  support your child’s mental health and learning needs while virtually learning from home. Free Virtual Intrepid Adventure Programs for Families (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00-4:00pm)

Virtual Intrepid Adventure Programs are family-friendly and engage all ages. They request that adults participate in the program with their children. Choose Your Learning Preference for Spring 2021

Remote learning students will now be able to opt into blended learning for the remainder of the school year.  Please visit the DOE website to fill out your Learning Preference survey by April 9, 2021. Students who switch to blended learning will begin their new schedule sometime in April (more information to come).

CEC 2 Candidate Forum hosted by District 2 Presidents’ Council, Monday, April 5, 2021 at 5:00 to 10:00 pm. Register here. (Translation available in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese). The candidates are seeking to represent their school community and all public school students by serving on the Community Education Councils (CEC), an education policy advisory body responsible for, among other things, reviewing and evaluating the district’s educational programs, approving zoning lines, and holding public hearings on certain matters.

Dial-A-Teacher for Free homework Help

Students and their parents or caregivers are invited to call 212-777-3380 Monday through Thursday between 4:00 and 7:00 p.m. to get free homework help from a licensed teacher. Many of the teachers are bilingual, so Dial-A-Teacher can assist students and families in 10 languages, including Armenian, Bengali, Chinese, English, French, Haitian-Creole, Korean, Russian, Spanish and Tagalog.

The “Enrollment” page can be used as proof of the student’s current attendance/enrollment and the “Guardian” page can also be used to verify that you are the guardian of your child. 

Virtual Cookshop for Parents/Guardians

There are six Virtual Cookshops for Families this school year. In the lessons, you will learn how to make healthy decisions. The last lesson will be on April 13, 20/21 and we will send out a reminder before the lesson.  If you are interested, please register here

Child Mind Institute’s FREE Workshop Series for Families

The Child Mind Institute will be hosting Caregiver Support Workshops. This workshop series is designed to provide families with proactive strategies to use to support your child’s mental health and learning needs while virtually learning from home. Free Virtual Intrepid Adventure Programs for Families (Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:00PM to 4:00 pm)

Join an Intrepid Museum educator each week as they explore history, science and ingenuity online together. Virtual Intrepid Adventure Programs are family-friendly and engage all ages. Adults are requested to participate in the program with their children. Programs run between 45 minutes and one hour. Advance registration for this drop-in online program is required in order to receive Zoom information and print-at-home materials, when applicable.
